It comes as a shock to me that people don’t think to look into what kind of ingredients are used in their personal care products. What’s even more of a shock to me is that some people just flat out don’t care.
The things we put on our skin are just as important as the things we eat. Toxic ingredients in our personal care products get absorbed into our blood stream and can cause various illnesses and diseases at worst and contribute to our toxic load at best.
I have gone through a lot of trial and error the past few years trying to find non-toxic products that actually deliver. These are the non-toxic products that I love, use regularly and highly recommend:
I love this brand because they make so many amazing non-toxic products and they never test on animals.
This cleanser is super gentle and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. It never clogs my pores, keeps breakouts at bay and leaves my face feeling squeaky clean at night.
Twice a month I treat myself to a bentonite clay face mask to really deep clean and detox the skin on my face.
Bentonite clay has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-septic properties. It also has a very strong negative charge so it’s able to absorb toxins and impurities from your skin. I mix about a teaspoon of clay with enough water to make a paste and slather it on my face with my fingers.
Make sure to only use plastic or ceramic when dealing with bentonite clay, metal can possibly weaken the charge of the clay.
Apple Cider Vinegar Toner
This can be used as an everyday toner, however I don’t use it that way because my skin is so sensitive and I don’t like to mess with it too much. Instead, I only use it after a bentonite clay mask to restore my skin’s natural PH balance.
I mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 3 parts water in a glass dropper bottle and use organic cotton pads to gently wipe it all over my face.
It’s important to buy apple cider vinegar in a glass bottle and to store your homemade toner in a glass bottle as well. If bought or stored in plastic, the acid will cause the chemicals from the plastic to leach into your apple cider vinegar.
Note: The face moisturizer that I use is listed in the body section of this post
This shampoo and conditioner set is freaking amazing! For a completely non-toxic shampoo, it lathers well and the conditioner does an amazing job at de-tangling my hair and making it feel soft and smooth.
I like to keep my skin care and hair care routine super simple so I don’t use anything extra on my hair. No serums, no mousses, no hairspray. Using this shampoo and conditioner is enough to keep my hair clean and hydrated without using any extra products.
This isn’t a “product” per se, but I thought I would add it in here because it’s free, it’s natural and it’s effective.
Nothing will nourish your hair better than the natural oils from your scalp. I only wash my hair twice a week, never use dry shampoo and every night and every morning I use a wooden brush to distribute the natural oils from my scalp to the ends of my hair.
If you talk to anyone who knows me in real life, they will tell you that I have an obsession with shea butter and that I carry it with me everywhere I go. They are not wrong.
I use shea butter on my entire body. I use it as a face moisturizer, a hand moisturizer, a body butter and a lip conditioner. I use it on my son in between diaper changes and to make his homemade diaper rash cream.
Shea butter contains vitamins A and E which help to nourish, heal and regenerate the skin. I buy organic shea butter in 1 KG packages from RocketRobin and put smaller amounts into different sized containers to use as lip chap, hand lotion, body butter, etc.
You can whip it with coconut oil to make a smoother body butter that melts quicker and easier. I do this using a kitchenaid stand mixer.
Luckily there are quite a few non-toxic deodorants on the market today, however some don’t work very well and others are not as clean as they claim to be.
My absolute favourite is this 100% non-toxic deodorant from RocketRobin. It actually works, doesn’t irritate my skin and comes in a wide variety of natural fragrances.
My runner-up non-toxic deodorant is Schmidt’s. My boyfriend, Claudio, uses this brand with no issues however the baking soda in it tends to irritate my sensitive skin if I use it everyday.
Castile Foaming Hand Soap
This hand soap is non-toxic, cost effective and super easy to make.
Fill any foaming hand soap dispenser with 1 part castile soap and 3 parts water. Castile soap comes in several different natural fragrances that you can use or you can make your own custom natural fragrance by using unscented Castile soap and adding a few drops of an essential oil of your choice.
Homemade Non-Toxic Toothpaste
I make my own non-toxic homemade toothpaste using only 3 ingredients. Click here for the full recipe.
Thanks for reading and I hope this helps anyone looking to make the switch over to non-toxic personal care products or anyone that has already made the switch and is just looking to change things up!
